Now unfortunately at best man wedding toast isn’t free of any writing, and as with any other speech or toast, you need to have a beginning. For the best man, this is the crucial part.
Start by being polite
If you are at a very big wedding, chances are that not everybody knows you. So it is always a good idea to start with a polite “Hi, I’m John Doe, Roberts best man” or something like that. Always have a polite beginning, as you need to remember that this is not only the day for your best friend, but often paid for by the bride and grooms father and mother. So it is a very good idea to thank the people hosting the wedding, traditionally the parents of the bride. If the groom and the bride are paying for the wedding themselves, simply thank them for inviting you and all the people.
It can also be a good idea to comment on how beautiful the wedding ceremony was, how beautiful the bride is and stuff like that. Don’t be too tacky though, do it with a glint in your eye, and be a bit charming about it. Nobody wants to hear somebody just making the standard boring comments about the brides dress or the wedding ceremony.
You have to be funny
Now this is an important part of giving your best man wedding toast, but it is not something you should over-do. Nobody expects you to be a comedian, but they would like to hear some jokes, fun stories or whatever about the groom. If you pull this off right, with a bit of charm, it will also make you more interested for all the bridesmaids at the wedding ;-)
In general, have fun with your toast – but don’t humiliate the groom. Don’t start telling a “fun story” about the groom, the bride or anyone else, if you know the person is going to be embarrassed – that will backfire very quickly. At all cost avoid everything that has to do with ex-girlfriends, and keep the toast and the stories in a sober tone, as there will most likely be kids and grandparents at the wedding.
